The Experience

A visit to Zeitz MOCAA is a must for any budding artist or art enthusiast. This former grain silo opened in September 2017 and has been dubbed ‘Africa’s Tate Modern’ and stands as Africa’s largest contemporary art museum. The museum was named after Jochen Zeitz, former CEO of Puma and an African art enthusiast, and many of the museum’s items are from his private collections.

The Museum focusses on African art predominantly from the 21st century, with most works post-2010 and dominated by young South African artists. The former silo, which houses 100 galleries spread out over nine floors, overlooks the Atlantic and the V&A Waterfront (there’s even a boutique hotel at the very top!) Clustered around the museum’s central atrium, which currently plays host to Nicholas Hlobo’s spectacular iimpundulu zonke ziyandilenda: a dragon-like sculpture referencing Xhosa mythology, are the cube-like gallery spaces. Hlobo, whos is one of the biggest South African names on display, shares gallery space with Athi-Patra Ruga, Mary Sibande, Kendell Geers and Penny Siopis.
