Did you know:

  • The Springboks play in green and gold jerseys with white shorts, with Springbok and King Protea emblems
  • The Springboks first match was on 30th July 1891 against the British Isles
  • From 1985 to 1991, due to apartheid, South Africa did not play a single test match against an established country and was not permitted by the International Rugby Board to compete in the inaugural 1987 Rugby World Cup, nor in the following 1991 Rugby World Cup
  • South Africa hosted the 1995 Rugby World Cup, with a new of support for the Springboks among both white and black communities championing the slogan "one team, one country”
  • In 1994, the ruling African National Congress (ANC) instituted a policy of transformation in South African sport so that the Springboks team would be more representative of South Africa's race and class

The Museum

The Springbok Experience is a must-visit for anyone coming to Cape Town. Rugby is the country’s pride and joy and as its national sport, there’s no better place to learn about the illustrious Springboks than at the state-of-the-art museum.

The Museum tells the story of the Springbok’s and their rise to fame throughout the years, their struggles throughout the apartheid, as well as the transformation that has happened within the rugby union and the country itself to make the team who it is today and what it represents as a national symbol.

Featuring over 60 audio visual displays, visitors can watch back some of the most impressive moments of sporting history. Don’t miss the historic objects, famous trophies, jerseys, and other rugby related memorabilia to bring it all to life.

If you’ve got the kids, there is a dedicated games zone, the ‘Springbok Trials,’ where they can get involved and test their kicking, passing, fitness, and reaction skills to see if they would pass the test. There is even a set of rugby poles, too! If you’d like to take something back with you there’s a flagship souvenir shop where you can get all manner of Springbok related items.
